The Formula 1 Drivers Championship has never been this exciting for some time. It has so often been predictable and boring.

The British Grand Prix is this weekend and it promises to be another exciting race. Silverstone, the home of Formula 1 in the United Kingdom is yet again hosting this motor racing spectacle. 96 000 lucky spectators will be able to watch it live . McLaren, being one of the leading British racing outfits will be hoping to finish first. McLaren will surely try to recover from their last travails at Valencia where they could not make the podium. And failed to get any points. Moreover, Lewis Hamilton was shunted off the track. His car was struggling to get to the finish line in any case. No one wants to be beaten in their own home ground, so they will be pulling all stops to make sure they win the Grand Prix.

The added prospect of rainfall will make it even more a challenge and it will add to the excitement.

There was sad prelude to the race earlier this week when the Marussia test driver Maria De Villota suffered some horrific injuries following an accident. She has lost one eye as a result.  We all wish her a speedy and full recovery.

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have rightfully been hogging the limelight. Lewis Hamilton is second in the Drivers’ Championship.Jensaon has had a topsy-turvy season so far. Another Brit, Paul di Resta has maintained a low profile, but is proving to be a competitive driver. He is going to win one of these days. His driving has become better and he seems quite focused. His reputation has surely gone up a notch. He has so far amassed as many points as he amassed all of last season. Surely that’s an improvement. So he is one to watch.

Fernando Alonso will always pose a serious threat. The Ferraris are quite strong now and seem to have overcome some teething problems. The Ferrari has been quite competitive since the Spanish Grand Prix in May.  On his day he is hard to beat, he won the last Grand Prix after starting in 11th place. Besides, Fernando Alonso is the only man to have won twice this season . A remarkable season that has seen 7 different drivers  finishing top of the pile. Seb Vettel is also proving that he is no flash in the pan. The car let him down at the European Grand Prix and he will be trying hard to make amends. The Red Bull car is quite strong, but it has been beset with some gremlins this season. For some reason the car is not as reliable as it was last season.

The second part of the season is surely going to be different from what we have so witnessed. The top 3 cars, that is McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull are surely going to get better and the championship title will be fought within this group  (Williams and Mercedes will not upset the apple cart). These 3 aforementioned cars are going to be more consistent; McLaren will surely have overcome their pit-stop failings and as is often wont in life, the cream shall rise to the top.

McLaren are going to do well as this is their home turf. Ferrari maybe pipped by Red Bull. Red Bull will be chomping at the bits following  the problems they experienced at Valencia (European Grand Prix).

Predictions for the podium are:

1. Lewis Hamilton

2. Sebastien Vettel

3. Jenson Button

Hey, I got the predictions wrong. Thought Alonso maybe could make 4th. Webber,…uh. Not a bad driver, but expected Vettel to pip him. As for McLaren-What a huge disappointment. No national pride at all. Expected much better. Coincidentally,I spent Saturday night having a chinwag with one of the ‘official fans’ who spent a vast fortune to be at Silverstone for 3 nights. This guy naturally expectedMcLaren to be competitive. The damp squib show was an anti-climax.

My predictions were wack, but I am gonna get it right next race, the Germany Grand Prix at Hockenheim. Watch this space!

Tennis at Wimbledon is probably one of the highlights of summer. Watching it on telly aint bad either

What I do not understand though is the grunts that some, if not all of the female tennis players produce. Is it because it’s now tougher to play tennis. I do not recall watching the Steffi Grafs, Martina Navratiolvas, Chris Evert-Lloyds making such noises. I hope my memory serves me right here. Take for instance yesterday’s match between Ms Azarenka and Ms Williams. Ms Azarenka was so noisy that at one point I had to mute the TV sound. I really felt sorry for her. All that pain for the game she loves. Ms Azarenka’s noises were said to have reached 98 decibels at some point. Well that’s rather much coming from such a petite human being.

I remember Martina Navratilova once calling those ‘shrieking noises’  a form of cheating. Whether it is ‘cheating’ I don’t profess to know if it or if it isnt. It certainly did not give Ms Azarenka any advantages yesterday. Or maybe we should be asking Ms Williams post-match whether the noises had any effect on her concentration. It certainly puts viewers off. Even those in the confines of the stadium, I am sure seem miffed. According to some papers today, it became a laughing matter after she lost. One paper even ridicules her, describing her as the Screaming Banshee of Belarus. A bit unfair.

Apparently according to that venerable fountain of knowledge, Wikipedia, Monica Seles and  Jimmy Connors share the honour, the ignominy of being pioneers of grunting in tennis (depends how you see/hear it). Some male players do grunt. It’s not the sole preserve of female players. Djokovic makes noises as well. However, he is no match for the Screaming Banshee of Belarus.

I wish they could penalize players for the screeching. It does put people off. It makes you think playing tennis is rather painful.

Today’s the men’s semi-finals. I wonder why they do not call it the Gentlemen’s semi-finals, after all the girls’ version is called the  Ladies semi-final. Another anomaly is this, the boys do not get addressed as ‘Mr’,yet the girls are addresses as ‘Ms’. Am I missing something here?

Well the Great British Hope is playing this afternoon. Mr Federer is playing  Mr Djokovic, and as things stand, Mr. Federer seems to be heading for a win. Mr Murray (Hope of the nation) will be playing Mr. Tsonga, the mercurial French Man. Wish the headline writers had come up with some eye-catching politically-charged headline. Remember they did come up with the ‘Debt Derby’ when Germany played Greece at the Euro2012 tournament. It’s the Scotsman (British) versus the Frenchman, surely there must be an eye-catching headline waiting to be uncovered. I have come up with my own- the ‘Battle of the nearly-Men’. This may not be very eye-catching, but I am not a professional journalist! Both have  never won a  Grand Slam.

I am sure by the time you read this Andy Murray will be in the Final. If  National fervour could hit aces; serve and volley like Mr. Becker used too, cover green grass like Mr. Djokovic does and scrrech like Ms Azarenka-it would surely be enough for Andy Murray to reach and win the Final.

Now that Mr Murray has reached the Final, erasing 74 years of hurt in just under 3 hours of some absorbing tennis, we hope he does win the final. We also hope Federer wins. We are not going to be biased. However, if one is into betting, the smart money would be on Mr Murray winning.  We all look forward to a great match.

Wishing all the players success. Come on Andy!! Your time is nigh.

Oh Cameron! You are the supposed to be the leader of one of the biggest democracies, not some bumbling dyed-in the wool Little Englander Buffon.

The other day, he called Argentina ‘colonialists’ for their temerity to challenge the United Kingdom’s continued occupation of the Falklands (or Malvinas). Now now Mr Cameron, who was the biggest colonialist of them all? Who still occupies vast swathes of foreign land? The Americans only celebrated their Independence Day yesterday. Did they fight the Argentinians all those years ago  for their independence? Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria to name but three. Pakistan and India are still bickering after they got their indepencence from the United Kingdom in 1948. They are still bickering because their counrty was so ruthlesslessy subdivided on ethnic and religious lines such that the Brits left it a mess and couldn’t work out what to do with Kashmir. the Palestinians are till in such a mess because of the United Kingdom’s machinations. He needs a lesson in History.

The Euro

Britain has been teaching the Euro-countries how to deal with the current economic crisis. Who has been championing this teaching? Well, Mr Cameron of course! An expert economist and politician I dare add! Britain repeatedly says that saving the eurozone remains in Britain’s vital national interest. France and Germany say that if Britain has such strong views on how it should be saved then it should cough up directly than through relatively modest and indirect IMF contributions (Guardian). Moreover, Germany & France have bigger economies than Britain. Another factor he forgets is that he was not really elected as Prime Minister, he leads a coalition. Whereas the French President and Germany Chancellor were directly elected into office.

He has of late been saying we are going to shut the borders to the Greeks as their economy implodes and they are forced to leave the Eurozone. Going back to the Drachmas! Well, if there are any Greeks intend on leaving their sun-drenched island, surely they maybe doing that all ready by getting travel tickets using their last cash reserves instead of waiting until the country grinds to a halt. How crass and insensitive for the Prime Minister of a leading nation to be so disdainful and callous.

The Poor

The less off have not been left out of Mr Cameron’s drive to change the world. They have been advised not to procreate like rabbits! He threatens to slash benefits. Instead of championing social inclusion he blames most of the economic ills on the impoverished of this beautiful island. The Tories are prescribing that the poor Stop drinking and Stop smoking. This will be achieved by increasing the prices, and other subtle methods. Admittedly the health benefits are immense. However, its sheer hypocrisy. Moreover, it smacks of nit-picking symptoms, and attempting to treat them yet ignoring the major illnesses afflicting society-social exclusion and the economic problems. He could do well  introducing the one-child family (imitate China-after all the economy seems to be booming!) or better still open gulags and throw all the miscreant parents into them for some re-education in ‘family values’ , work and teach them conservative ideals. ‘Family values’ seems to be the bedrock of Tory policy. As if all our problems will be cured if we got married (and stop living as single parents or co-habitating). The biggest joke of all was the attack on Jimmy Carr for tax evasion. The mind boggles. Why pick on him when the majority of Tory benefactors are known to be doing the same thing? It is the silly season indeed.

The champion of ‘caring conservatism’ is finally showing his true colours. Wolf and sheep’s clothing comes to mind. For some reason,  true colours tend to come out this season. For the uninitiated, the  silly season is the period lasting for a few summer months typified by the emergence of frivolous news (behaviours to boot) stories in the media.
